What is Nairobi GPO?

Nairobi GPO (General Post Office) is the headquarters of the Postal Corporation of Kenya (Posta Kenya) and the main post office serving Nairobi’s Central Business District. Located in the iconic Posta House on Kenyatta Avenue, the GPO has been the hub of Kenya’s postal operations since 1906.

The postal code 00100 is assigned exclusively to the GPO, making it the default code for most CBD addresses, government offices, and major institutions in central Nairobi. When Kenyans or international senders use Nairobi as the destination without specifying an area, 00100 is typically assumed as the postal code.

Beyond mail services, the GPO houses the popular GPO Huduma Centre, where Kenyans access various government services, including ID applications, KRA services, NTSA licensing, and more, all under one roof.

How to Get a P.O. Box at GPO Nairobi

Getting a P.O. Box at Posta Kenya’s GPO in Nairobi is a simple process for individuals, businesses, and organizations seeking a secure, permanent way to receive mail. A P.O. Box ensures all your letters, statements, parcels, and official documents reach you safely, especially if you live in apartments, shared housing, or areas without reliable door-to-door mail delivery.

To apply for a private letter box, you must visit any Posta Kenya branch (including GPO Nairobi) or complete the process online through the Posta portal. Before applying, make sure you have the required documents ready.

For individuals, the basic requirements are:

  • Your original National ID or Passport, plus a photocopy
  • A filled application form

For companies or organizations, Posta requires:

  • A copy of the Certificate of Registration
  • A Company PIN Certificate
  • A copy of at least one Director’s ID
  • A completed application form

Once you have these documents, the next step is to obtain and fill out the Online application form. You can pick up the form directly from the GPO counter or download it from Posta Kenya’s website. The form will ask for your full name, contact information, physical address, business or personal details, and your preferred type of box (individual, corporate, or special categories). If you prefer a specific box number, you can indicate it, but availability is not guaranteed.

After completing the form, you must submit it together with your documents and pay the required fees. You can pay in person at GPO using cash or card, or complete the whole process online through the Posta Kenya application portal.

Processing usually takes 1–3 business days, after which you return to the branch to collect your P.O. Box key. Make sure you carry your payment receipt and your ID when picking up the key. Once issued, your P.O. Box becomes active immediately, and you can start receiving letters and parcels.

N/B: The P.O. Box must be renewed annually to remain active. You can renew at any Posta Kenya branch, or pay using the same M-Pesa Paybill number. Posta also allows quarterly or half-year renewals if you do not wish to pay for the full year at once. If you fail to renew for too long, the box may be locked or reassigned, so it’s important to renew on time.
