Nairobi Address Line 1: How to Fill It Correctly With Examples

Posted on December 5, 2025December 25, 2025 by Marble

Many people in Nairobi struggle when they see “Address Line 1” on forms. You might be applying for a job online, buying something from Jumia, or filling out a visa form. The form asks for Address Line 1, and you freeze. What exactly should you write there?

This happens because Kenya uses P.O. Box addresses differently from physical street addresses. Most forms are designed for countries where everyone has street numbers. But in Kenya, sand, to be more specific, in Nairobi, the way the Address one is filled or even used is a bit different. Here is how.

What is Address Line 1?

Address Line 1 is the main part of your address. It tells where you live or where you receive mail. Think of it as the most important piece of information about your location.

In Kenya, most people use P.O. Box addresses instead of physical street addresses. This is different from countries like the US or UK, where everyone has a house number and street name. When you fill out forms online, you need to know how to adapt your Kenyan address to fit their format.

The form usually has these fields:

  • Address Line 1
  • Address Line 2 (optional)
  • Postcode or ZIP code
  • Town/City
  • Country

For Reference, you can see the image attached below:

How to Fill P.O. Box Addresses (Most Common in Kenya)

This is where most Kenyans get confused. Your P.O. Box address looks like this: P.O. Box 234-00100, Nairobi. Let me show you exactly how to break it down for online forms by taking a real example: P.O. Box 234-00100, Nairobi

This address has THREE parts:

  1. Box number: 234
  2. Postal code: 00100
  3. Town/City: Nairobi

The dash (-) separates the box number from the postal code. The postal code tells you which post office handles your mail. 00100 is the General Post Office (GPO) in Nairobi. Different codes go to different post offices across Kenya.

Where Each Part Goes in the Form

This is the part that confuses most people. Here is the CORRECT way to fill a P.O. Box address by using P.O. Box 234-00100, Nairobi as an example:

  • Address Line 1: 234===> (Write ONLY the box number. Don’t write “P.O. Box” or the postal code here)
  • Address Line 2: (Optional)===> (You can leave this blank OR add extra details like your building name, apartment, or area. Example: “Westlands Plaza” or “NextGen Mall”)
  • Postcode: 00100===> (This is where the postal code goes. NOT in Address Line 2. The postcode has its own separate field)
  • Town/City: Nairobi ===>(Write the city where your post office is located. NOT the area name)
  • Country: Kenya

Common Nairobi Postal Codes You Should Know

The postal code tells you which post office your mail goes to. Here are the main postal codes for Nairobi:

00100 – Nairobi GPO (General Post Office)
00200 – City Square, Nairobi
00300 – Ronald Ngala Street
00400 – Tom Mboya Street, Nairobi
00500 – Enterprise Road, Nairobi
00800 – Parklands, Nairobi

When you write your address, always use the correct postal code for YOUR P.O. Box. If your address says P.O. Box 123-00200, then 00200 must go in the Postcode field.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Many Kenyans make these mistakes. Learn from them so your forms get accepted without problems:

Mistake #1: Putting Postal Code in Address Line 2

The postal code (00100, 00200, etc.) should NEVER go in Address Line 2. It belongs in the Postcode field.
âś— Wrong: Address Line 2 = 00100
âś“ Right: Leave Address Line 2 blank OR use it for building/area name. Put 00100 in Postcode field.

Mistake #2: Writing “P.O. Box” in Address Line 1

Just write the box number, not the words “P.O. Box”.
âś— Wrong: Address Line 1 = P.O. Box 234
âś“ Right: Address Line 1 = 234

Mistake #3: Squeezing Everything into Address Line 1

Don’t try to fit your entire address in one field.
âś— Wrong: Address Line 1 = P.O. Box 234-00100, Nairobi
âś“ Right: Split it properly – 234 in Line 1, 00100 in Postcode, Nairobi in Town/City

Mistake #4: Using Area Names as City Names

Westlands, Eastleigh, Kibera are areas, not cities.

âś— Wrong: Town/City = Westlands
âś“ Right: Town/City = Nairobi (you can put Westlands in Address Line 2)

Mistake #5: Leaving Fields Blank Because You’re Confused

If unsure, follow the format above. It works on Google AdSense, PayPal, Upwork, Amazon, and most sites.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What if I don’t have a P.O. Box address?

You can use your physical address. Write your house/apartment number and street name in Address Line 1. However, using the Box number is recommended to avoid mail getting lost.

Is Address Line 2 mandatory?

No. Address Line 2 is optional on most forms. If you only have a P.O. Box, you can leave Address Line 2 blank. Only fill it if you want to add extra details like your building name or area.

How do I find my postal code?

Look at your P.O. Box address. The number after the dash is your postal code. P.O. Box 234-00100 means your postal code is 00100. You can also check our postal code guide on this website.

Do I need to write “Kenya” in Address Line 1?

No. Write Kenya in the Country field. Address Line 1 is only for your box number or street address.
