Nakuru Postal Codes – Official Post Offices & Areas

Posted on December 26, 2025December 28, 2025 by Marble

Quick Answer: Nakuru County uses 11 different postal codes across its sub-counties. The main code is 20100 for Nakuru Town (both East and West), 20117 for Naivasha, 20107 for Njoro, 20106 for Molo, 20116 for Gilgil, 20108 for Rongai, 20113 for Bahati, 20109 for Subukia, and 20154 for both Kuresoi North and South. Never use 20100 for all areas; each sub-county requires its specific code for efficient mail delivery.

Are you looking for the correct postal code in Nakuru? You’re in the right place. Like all the 47 counties of Kenya, Nakuru is a city, town, as well as a County number 32 in Kenya with Unique Postal Codes. In Most Cases, most people are used to using 20100 for everything related to Postal services in Nakuru City, but this is where most people get it wrong since the county is divided into 11 sub-counties, each with its own codes.

Nakuru is Kenya’s 4th largest urban center and home to over 2.1 million people. In addition, the county has three major lakes (Lake Nakuru, Lake Bogoria, and Lake Elementaita), universities, military installations, and rapidly expanding towns. The postal infrastructure here serves the county government, Private institutions, and even individuals who directly own a P.O. Box at the Nakuru G.P.O.

What Are Nakuru Postal Codes?

Nakuru County uses the postal region prefix 20, which identifies it as part of the Rift Valley postal region managed by the Postal Corporation of Kenya, popularly known as Posta Kenya. This differs from Nairobi’s 00 prefix, Mombasa’s 80 prefix, or Eldoret’s 30 prefix. The format follows Kenya’s postal Code structure, which is usually a standard five-digit structure: the first two digits (20) represent the broader region, while the final three digits pinpoint the specific post office or delivery zone.

For example, 20100 is the main Nakuru G.P.O. code, which can be broken down as:

  • 20 = Rift Valley region (Nakuru County)
  • 100 = Nakuru Town GPO (General Post Office)

How to Use Nakuru Postal Codes Correctly

Nakuru Postal Format
Nakuru Postal Format

Postal codes are essential for the sorting and delivery of mail on time, but also knowing how to use them correctly will facilitate such a process even more. Just like how you write and format the Nairobi Postal address, the same format is applied when addressing mail in Nakuru County:

Standard P.O. Box Address Format

Correct format:
[Recipient Name]
P.O. Box [Number]-[Postal Code] [Town/Sub-County]
[KENYA]

Example 1 (Nakuru Town):

Sam Wekesa
P.O. Box 234-20100 Nakuru
KENYA

Example 2 (Naivasha):

Jane Wanjiru
P.O. Box 89-20117 Naivasha
KENYA

Example 3 (Njoro – University):

Dr. Peter Kamau
P.O. Box 531-20107 Njoro
KENYA

Where To Pay Attention: Always include the recipient’s full name on the first line. The hyphen between the box number and the postal code is mandatory (234-20100 is the correct format, not 234 20100). Include the town/sub-county name after the postal code for clarity. Add “KENYA” on the last line for international mail.

How to Rent a P.O. Box in Nakuru

The application process to get your own P.O. Box in Nakuru is an easy process, thanks to changes that Posta Kenya has made in the previous years. The application process is now entirely online, whereby you can complete everything from your phone or computer. Before you apply for one, you need to understand that Posta Kenya offers two types of P.O. Boxes, and your choice affects costs, collection methods, and what you can use the address for.

First, there is the Physical P.O. Box (Traditional Metal Box), where, if you apply for one, you get physical keys, a designated box number, and a secure slot at your chosen post office. Lastly, there’s the Virtual P.O. Box (MPost ) whereby your phone number becomes your postal address. Upon applying, you don’t get a physical box or keys; instead, you get just SMS alerts when mail arrives, and then you visit your chosen post office with your ID to collect.

The application process for both is almost similar ( see these resources where we cover all in full). But for now, here’s how you can apply for the physical one easily:

  • Go to posta.co.ke on your browser. Look for “Online Services” in the middle section with blue icons. Click it, then select “Box Services“. You’ll see three options: click “Apply Here” under “New Box Application
  • A dropdown menu appears: “Choose Type of Application.”Select from:
    • Personal – For individuals
    • Business – For registered companies
    • Standalone – For businesses without complete registration
    • SpecialGroup – For NGOs and special corporate entities
    • LearningAndReligiousOrganizations – For schools, churches, mosques
  • Next, proceed to fill in Your Personal Details. Here, you will be required to provide your information exactly as it appears on your National ID or Passport, mainly your name. Other details include email address, Mobile number, etc.
  • You will also be required to select which Nakuru post office you want. Luckily enough for you, we have listed them all above. Alternatively, you can also just type under the Postal Input TYPE Nakuru, and you will be presented with a list of all Postal offices in Nakuru county for you to choose the one you want to use.
  • In the final stages, proceed and select your Payment Period. Here, the system will show your number of months available from 12 months, etc, and how much you pay; the system calculates your total cost automatically.
  • To pay, the system redirects you to the eCitizen payment gateway, where you can choose your default payment gateway, ie, M-Pesa, etc.
  • After payment, you receive confirmation within 10 minutes via email containing your P.O. Box number, the Post Office location, Instructions for key collection, etc. You can then proceed to the Nakuru post office, where you applied to get your Keys.

How much you will be paying for your Box number is as follows :
